When was Canada Zone officially recognized by NSBE?
The answer will be provided in the next issue of the newsletter.Greetings from the first ever issue of the NSBE Canada eNewsletter, timed to coincide with the beginning of the new year.
This newsletter was created to increase communication between the chapters within the Canada Zone.
We know that it is difficult for a chapter in Montreal to know what a chapter in Toronto is doing in their community or for a chapter in Toronto to know what a chapter in Ottawa is doing in their community and vice versa. We believe that sharing of information can serve as a source of inspiration, a sharing of ideas or a source of general NSBE Canada Zone pride.
It is our hope that the newsletter will be published at least monthly. If we receive strong feedback, we will make it a bi-weekly issue. However, the newsletter will only succeed with input from you, the members, so if your chapter has a fundraiser planned, a special speaker, a collaboration with another campus group, or any other special event, let us know so that we can share it with other chapters in the zone.
Similarly, if you know someone within your chapter who has their own business, volunteers their time with an organization special to them, or is doing something note-worthy within NSBE or otherwise, send us an email and we'll highlight that member in the "Focus On" section of one of our later issues.
If you have any general comments on the newsletter, please feel free to contact us and let us know.
In this issue, we will be focusing on the conferences that have passed and the two to come.

The International Leadership Summit (ILS) will be making a stop in 3 Canadian cities - Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal from February 9, 2007 to February 14, 2007. This event, which will have NSBE leadership in attendance, is geared towards developing high-level membership leadership and chapter operations, as well as establishing the framework for future NSBE Canada success, especially since the National Convention will be hosted by Toronto in 2010.
This will be done via two avenues:
We encourage you to come out to this event when it reaches your city. The future of NSBE in Canada lies on your shoulders, and this event will provide you with some of the tools you need to move to the next level, NSBE-style.
The dates for the membership events are as follows:
Toronto - February 10, 2007 - 9AM - 2PM
Ottawa - February 12, 2007 - 6PM - 10PM
Montreal - February 13-14, 2007 - 6PM - 8:30PM, both days.
Please note that these events are FREE so register now for the ILS!
The exact locations will be communicated to you as soon as possible.
NSBE Canada wants its presence felt at the 33rd Annual National Convention, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio from Mar.28 - Apr. 1, 2007. The theme for the convention is "Our Time, our Renaissance" and it is fitting since the convention will be held in the mother region, Region IV.
There are currently -- NSBE Canada members who've already registered for the convention. For those of you who missed the early bird deadline, we encourage you all to register on NOL for the convention BEFORE the Feb. 16 deadline. The cost is now $130US. If you're a Torchbearer, i.e. with a confirmed GPA above 3.2, then the cost is $105US.
In preparation for the convention, NSBE Canada needs a chant so if you have chant-making skills, please email us.
This year's convention promises to live up to expectations with well over 10,000 attendees expected, over 90% of whom will be students. You can look forward to over 300 companies at the career fair, a graduate school fair, dynamic general session speakers, numerous workshops, networking suites, mini-conferences (PCI, Graduate, TPC, International) and varied entertainment.
With over 700 students in attendance including almost 50 NSBE Canada Zone members, Region First members proved why we're the number one region.
NSBE Canada attendees can attest that the speakers were very inspiring and there were so many good workshops that it was hard to choose just one from each time slot to attend. Students went to workshops where they learned how to be a good leader, how to study smarter not harder, how to make a Windows Media Player skin and how to salvage the rest of their semester, among other topics. In addition, there were approximately 30 companies at the career fair, and, although this was not as much as some would have liked, some students from NSBE Canada actually got interviews as a result of attending the career fair.
NSBE Canada had representation in the Regional Academic Technical Bowl (ATB) competition for the first time with two teams from the University of Toronto representing NSBE Canada. While one team was eliminated in the first round, the other team made it all the way to the semifinals. This University of Toronto team may still yet compete for 3rd place. Regardless of the outcome, their performace was commendable considering that this was their first time competing in the Regional ATB.
Overall, the level of professionalism in display at the conference was excellent.
As for the social activities...Schools came out to FRC with their best chants, some of which brought down the house at the Saturday opening session. The after-party was packed, the group that performed at the step show was very good, the banquet was an elegant affair and the general friendly atmosphere was very conducive to networking.
Can I hear "One Fiyah!"?
Organized by NSBE U of T's PCI Chair, Troy Patterson, with support from the NSBE U of T executive board and chapter, the conference had over 400 high school students from the GTA in attendance.
The students benefitted from tailored seminars, workshops, and speakers with the aim of increasing the youths' interest and excellence in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas.
NSBE National Director,Carl Mack, aka Brother E.D. was the guest speaker at the conference.
Kudos to NSBE U of T for inspiring the youths and helping to bring awareness to NSBE within Canada.
There were 75 attendees, including 60 students from McGill, Concordia, Carleton, Ryerson and U of T, who registered for the event and they were not disappointed.
FZC Conference Planning Chair, Elijah Johnson, along with Zone Chair, Nnaziri Ihejirika, and the rest of the Canada Zone CEB and Conference Committee worked hard to ensure that those who attended FZC were thoroughly satisfied.
Here are some of the things that happened at FZC:
Workshop topics included workplace image and professionalism, career planning, networking, grad school planning, financial vitality and 3D Animation and Games. There was also a very engaging panel discussion on the relevance of NSBE today. For the first time, a mock Academic Technical Bowl (ATB) was conducted this year to lead to Canada Zone getting more recognition in the region.
Who took home the Zone ATB title this year? Was it McGill, University of Toronto, Carleton or Concordia?
The Zone ATB winner was the hosting chapter, McGill University.
Guest speakers included Dr. James Nemes, Dean of Graduate Studies at McGill, Amina Mire, a professor at Carleton, and Stevenson Dunn, the Region I chairperson.
Congrats to the McGill U chapter and the Zone Eecutive Board for putting on a successful conference.
This section will be added in the next issue.
Do you know someone within NSBE Canada who is making an impact in their community? Please let us know.
Until next time, NSBE Luv'
